Supporting Opportunities for Every Student’s Success

“We are blessed to have outstanding teachers and facilities which provide amazing opportunities for students in our district. I give to the foundation hoping every student will find their passion.”

Margaret Smollen has been a longtime supporter of the Iowa City Community School District Foundation. Meg learned philanthropy from her parents and believes in giving back to the community.  She has a strong commitment to equity among all of our schools, to allow every child in our District to be successful in school and life. Although Meg’s sons have graduated from the District, she continues to be a generous supporter of the Iowa City schools since she truly wants to make a difference in the lives of all of the students in this area.

Meg’s three sons attended the Iowa City schools and she credits their educational experiences as the foundation that has launched their successful college and work careers.

• John is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and now teaches English to Spanish speaking students in Madrid, Spain.
• Bill is also a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and works with Ameriprise in the financial services industry.
• Peter is a recent graduate of West High School and is studying music performance, with a major in jazz saxophone, at DePaul University in Chicago.

Meg’s three sons have followed different career paths. However, the broad-based quality education and school years rich with opportunities allowed them to find success in college and in their professional lives.

Thank you to Meg Smollen and her family for their steadfast support of the area public schools and the experiences that are made available to the students through the generous support of donors.
