Visiting Author

Hills Bank member fdic logo - blueThe Visiting Author program is one of the targeted  program’s the ICCSD Foundation supports. In partnership with Hills Bank’s Community Reading Month, a children’s book author is selected each year to visit the District and speak with students about their writing and experiences.

In 2018, illustrator and author Bryan Collier will visit with Iowa City Community School District first and second graders November 5 – 9.  Curriculum before the author’s visit is guided around the author, his books, and works similar to his. This program is funded through a generous donation from Hills Bank.

Bryan Collier grew up in rural Maryland, but now makes his home in Harlem in New York City.  He was interested in art at an early age and continues to share that love in his work as a writer and illustrator of children’s books and through his work with kids at Harlem Horizon Studio.

His book, Uptown, which he wrote and illustrated, provides a child’s view of the sights and sounds of the Harlem neighborhood.  Uptown received many awards, including the 2001 Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration, the 2001 Ezra Jack Keats Award for New Illustrator, and Parenting Magazine’s Reading Magic Award.  Look for Mr. Collier’s illustrations in the books Martin’s Big Words, Visiting Langston, and Freedom River, along with several other biographical books on prominent figures such as Rosa Parks, Roberto Clemente, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, and Barack Obama.

2014 Visiting Author Peter Brown Highlights

Here’s what parents are saying about the Visiting Author Program:

I just wanted to thank you all so much for the visiting author program. I have 3 kids in the district, and all 3 of them have been absolutely thrilled to meet a real author. My 2nd grader saw Peter Brown last week, and hasn’t stopped talking about it. It’s such a wonderful program, and I just wanted to thank you so much for everything you do!

I attended the visiting author session with Peter Brown when he came to Weber. He was very engaging and the kids enjoyed him so much. Some of the kids I work with in Reading Recovery have extremely few books in their homes. It is truly amazing and touching that you would have a donor provide books for all kids who wanted them. I think the kids will treasure the books because they have a personal connection to the author. The visiting author program is an incredible opportunity for kids.
