...striving to reach every child, every year...

Visiting Author

Hills Bank member fdic logo - blueThe Visiting Author program is one of the targeted  program’s the ICCSD Foundation supports. In partnership with Hills Bank’s Community Reading Month, a children’s book author is selected each year to visit the District and speak with students about their writing and experiences.

In 2017, author Candace Fleming will visit with Iowa City Community School District third and fourth graders during October 30- November 3. Curriculum before the author’s visit will be guided around the author, her books, and works similar to hers. This program is funded through a generous donation from Hills Bank.

Candace Fleming awarded herself the Newbery Medal in fifth grade after scraping the gold sticker off the class copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pond and pasting it onto her first novel—a ten-page, ten-chapter mystery called Who Done It? She’s been collecting awards (her own, not Elizabeth George Speare’s) ever since.

Today, Candace is the versatile and acclaimed author of more than twenty books for children and young adults, including the Los Angeles Times Book Prize honored The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of the Russian Empire; Boston Globe/Horn Book Award-winning biography, The Lincolns; the bestselling picture book, Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!; and the beloved Boxes for Katje.

2014 Visiting Author Peter Brown Highlights

Here’s what parents are saying about the Visiting Author Program:

I just wanted to thank you all so much for the visiting author program. I have 3 kids in the district, and all 3 of them have been absolutely thrilled to meet a real author. My 2nd grader saw Peter Brown last week, and hasn’t stopped talking about it. It’s such a wonderful program, and I just wanted to thank you so much for everything you do!

I attended the visiting author session with Peter Brown when he came to Weber. He was very engaging and the kids enjoyed him so much. Some of the kids I work with in Reading Recovery have extremely few books in their homes. It is truly amazing and touching that you would have a donor provide books for all kids who wanted them. I think the kids will treasure the books because they have a personal connection to the author. The visiting author program is an incredible opportunity for kids.
