The Visiting Author program is one of the five key program’s the ICCSD Foundation supports. In partnership with Hills Bank’s Community Reading Month, a children’s book author is selected each year to visit the District and speak with students about their writing and experiences.
In 2016, Iowa City author Delia Ray will visit with Iowa City Community School District fifth and sixth graders during October 24-31. Curriculum before the author’s visit will be guided around the author, her books, and works similar to hers. This program is funded through a generous donation from Hills Bank.
More About the Author . . . . . . .
Delia Ray can remember exactly what she was doing when her lifelong fascination with old things began. She was building a fort in the woods of Tidewater, Virginia behind the 1830s-era farmhouse where she grew up. When she turned over a rotten log and found an antique key, the stories in her head began to spin. Delia is still dreaming up stories inspired by history today. The research for her books has taken her from the Royal Canadian Mountain Police archives in the Yukon Territory to an attic at the Alabama School for the Deaf to cemeteries and abandoned elementary schools scattered throughout the rural Midwest. Delia has published three non-fiction books about American history and four novels for young readers. Her books have received numerous starred reviews and been nominated for Children’s Choice lists in ten states.
Delia and her husband have three grown daughters and live on eight acres in Iowa City. One of Delia’s favorite spots on the property is the family treehouse, which has two floors, a woodstove, and a tiny porch overlooking the Iowa River that has been known to cure severe cases of writer’s block.
Her books for middle grade readers include Finding Fortune, Here Lies Linc, Ghost Girl, Singing Hands, and Behind the Blue and Gray.

2014 Visiting Author Peter Brown Highlights
Here’s what parents are saying about the Visiting Author Program:
I just wanted to thank you all so much for the visiting author program. I have 3 kids in the district, and all 3 of them have been absolutely thrilled to meet a real author. My 2nd grader saw Peter Brown last week, and hasn’t stopped talking about it. It’s such a wonderful program, and I just wanted to thank you so much for everything you do!

I attended the visiting author session with Peter Brown when he came to Weber. He was very engaging and the kids enjoyed him so much. Some of the kids I work with in Reading Recovery have extremely few books in their homes. It is truly amazing and touching that you would have a donor provide books for all kids who wanted them. I think the kids will treasure the books because they have a personal connection to the author. The visiting author program is an incredible opportunity for kids.
